The Color of Relationships

Today I am yellow.

The Boyfriend and I spent some much needed “us time” together this past weekend.  This time included such ridiculousness as watching horrible movies (a favorite pastime), eating delicious food (the non-healthy kind) and generally just reconnecting and remembering why we like each other so much in the first place.

Because I’m ready to admit…we did not like each other very much this summer.

As much as I hear “relationships are work”, you’d think I would not be surprised when I discover that, in fact, RELATIONSHIPS ARE WORK.  This summer was one incident after another of poor communication, hidden grudges, and even a few temper tantrums.  (Those are all my faults, I swear.)

One day, I was in a full on panic about the state of “us”…were we degenerating into nothing?  Who was this person sitting on the couch next to me?  Am I being ignored, or do we just not talk that much anymore?  Suddenly, it occurred to me…yes, relationships are indeed a process.  And yes, this not-so-good time is as much a part of the fabric of “us” as the times when we get along and things are easy.

I guess I’ve just come to appreciate that we are not monochromatic.  We are not always firey red and steamy, nor are we always calming blue and comfortable.  Sometimes we are the puke green of “you are really annoying”.  But that’s ok.  Puke green is a time for assessment; it doesn’t mean you have to paint your walls with it, but get creative and you’ll figure out a way to accessorize with throw pillows.

Relationships are a spectrum of color and emotion.  I am happy to be yellow today, and I will accept if I’m gray tomorrow.

PS--I want a piece of that cake.  Mmmm

Hi, I stumbled upon your blog through another person's site, and I really love reading it. This post in particular is so true - my boyfriend and I have gone through so many ups and downs (90% of them due to my insane emotions and moods and not so fantastic family) but even the days that I feel like we're more "yellow" than anything else are days that I cherish. And yes, every color is simply a different opportunity to experience each other in new ways.

:) Thank you for taking the time to create/maintain this blog, and for your thoughtful entries. Its nice to know there are people out there humble enough to admit their human flaws, and generous enough to share insight from their lives with the rest of us who are still bumbling along and figuring it out.
