30 before 30: #22--Have My Fortune Read

30 before 30

#22--Have My Fortune Read

Read all of my "30 before 30" adventures here!

I had planned to find a psychic here in C-bus, but who knew how expensive Mid-west clairvoyants are?  So, when I was in New Orleans, and happened to see a row full of Tarot Card readers sitting right there on the street, I plopped down and prepared for…something.

I wouldn’t say that I’m a skeptic when it comes to that whole line of work.  I do believe people can feel energies and auras, and I’m more inclined to think that a Tarot Card reading is a bit more, er, reliable than say, a crystal ball or whatever.  (I think it has something to do with the fact that they’re throwing down random cards, but can still read things about your life.)

Anyway, long story short, this man floored me.  FLOORED.  Had he said, “You’re wearing pink underwear right now” I might have fallen over and died right there.  He did say, in a nutshell, “Here is your life, your plans, everything.”  Even Carly commented, “Dude, I don’t even know you that well, and that reading was dead on.”

Here are just a few of the items he nailed:

-I no longer get along with my mother, though I used to.

-I am “on the outside looking in” when it comes to spirituality

-My boyfriend is unemployed (And it wasn’t, “Oh, something’s up with your boyfriend,” it was, “Your boyfriend is having a hard time…he’s unemployed.”)

-I am a hermit (HA) and work much better alone

It’s not that any of the things he said were a total revelation, it’s that I left our time feeling completely validated.   He had asked me to shuffle the cards while thinking of a specific question, and I thought of “What will I do/who will I be?”  Without knowing what I hoped the answer would be, he basically encouraged me to go for it and let me know—even though he doesn’t know me from any other slightly inebriated tourist—that I could do it.

I realize as I’m typing this out that it sounds as if these little tidbits are things anyone could have told me.  Perhaps.  On the other hand, I really am forever grateful to this New Orleans man for helping me gain a little perspective.  I just felt…relieved, like I’d been spending so much energy on outside distractions, but that it would be ok now to hunker down and dream and work, work and dream.

Plus, he was WAY cheaper than people in Ohio.

Have you ever been to a Tarot Card reader?  Would you?

I get my cards read about once a year. Usually at the Renaissance Faire. I dig it the most, baby. Unless the person doing it is a total see-thru charlatan, I usually come away with a new perspective on things. It's very refreshing. If the person's dead-on like the one you had, yeah, I feel like I'm wearing pink underwear too.

One of my coworkers has studied Tarot for years and is amazing with her cards. She's totally open with her interpretations, which in turn makes you more open and realistic with your interpretations. It's really interesting to go regularly and see the patterns in your readings. She also does it for free because she doesn't believe that you have to pay for your own interpretations of things that you would usually see/come across anyways.
I find it super interesting about the history of Tarot, the religious background to it, the different decks used, what each cards/arcana mean, the elements and numbers and how the react with each other, etc. It's so complex and awesome to see.
Tarot readings, if you get a nonscammer, are pretty sweet!

I've never had my cards read intentionally, but I've gone with one g/f, twice, and both times I went as moral support no interest in having myself read.

First time: The woman quietly told me I had the strength to deal with the grief lying ahead
Second time: the woman said I was recovering a great loss and recovering from surgery....

Both were more dead on than I can ever explain... I'm still a bit of skeptic but more open to having it done again after being validated by a stranger. somehow that means more at times.

Glad you had an awesome time and you did this, thanks for writing the post.

One of my best friends is actually a Tarot reader so she does this for free for me all the time. Sometimes she'll actually call me and be like "So, I was reading cards for you last night, and..." I've never plopped down in front of a stranger and done it though. Somehow, I feel like that would be more validating. Maybe I'll give that a go.
