30 before 30: #20--Sponsor Someone/Something in Need
Monday, July 27, 2009 at 9:35AM About a year ago, I discovered a great organization called Bat World. I had no idea that there were foundations solely dedicated to bats, let along amazing ones like BW that provide education, awareness and resources for bats in the Texas area. For example, I learned from BW that bats do not regularly turn into philanthropists, Scientologists, and more recently, greasy English dudes:

Anyway, turns out that bats are super helpful to our environment for all sorts of reasons. They are also not "vermin", nor do they suck people's blood, nor do they get tangled in people's hair on purpose to terrorize them. AND, they happen to be very, very cute...who knew?
A few weeks ago, then, after some research and a bat puzzle or five, I decided to adopt these guys. The pallid bat is a teeny weeny thing, coming in at a whopping three inches. A research facility in the area was conducting horrid, unnecessary experiments on these little guys when the rescue organization swooped in to help. As part of my adoption, they sent me a really nice 5x8 photo, and a whole slew of information on bats and how to help bats in my area.
Check out their site, or research and pick your own cause to sponsor! Most rescues and organizations offer very affordable ways to help.
And just because my guys are adorbs:

Very Cool! Congrats!
We have brown bats in the neighbourhood.
They swoop down into the pools, ponds, bird baths, and eat all the bugs that terrorize us. lol
Congrats again!
I usually think bats are really ugly, they freak me out with their little faces. And I was thinking those ones looked ugly too, until I saw the teeny little one being squished by the other one climbing on it. Cute!
They remind me a little bit of piglets.
I'm a big time gardener and spend a lot of time outside so I love our local bats for the amount of insects they eat. I always walk my dog at dusk and I watch the bats swooping down to get a meal. They are fast and very aerobatic. I do wear a hat at dusk because I'm always afraid they will get tangled in my hair.
But I know how beneficial bats are. Good job on your adoption. I've adopted meerkats, polar bears and the humane society!
