30 before 30: #18-Take a Spontaneous Trip

Last weekend, Jillian extended an invitation for visitors while her husband would be out of town for ten days.  After reading, I immediately thought, "What a great excuse to take a spontaneous trip!"  So, I booked a flight, and this morning, I left for Chicago.

Here is how I currently feel about spontaneity:

Ecstatic.I had a connecting flight in Cincinnati, which, incidentally, is about two hours from Columbus.  My flight from Columbus was late, but I breathed a sigh of relief when I reached my Cincinnati connection just in time.

I really, really needn't have worried.

First, we boarded the plane.  Then, we sat.  And sat.  Then we heard, "the weather is bad in Chicago, why don't you de-plane and we'll have an update in an hour and a half."  We de-planed.  I decided to have a lovely lunch.  Twenty minutes later, they sent us all into a panic because, "RE-BOARD!!  RIGHT NOW!!" We re-boarded.  Then, we sat.  And sat.  And sat.

How very Suessian of us.

We sat for four hours.  On the runway.  Two hours from my home.  I specifically spent money on a ticket because I really, really didn't want to drive the six hours to the Windy City.  Yeah, hm, regretting that one.

Finally, they told us that no one is going to Chicago.  We de-planed.  Everyone ran like they were being prodded with fiery probes to the help desk to see when their flights had been re-booked.  Mine was re-booked for...tomorrow.

Did I mention I was only going for two days?

So, I re-routed my flight back to Columbus.  And then I realized, HOLY BALLS, I just spent a ton of money to take a twelve hour round trip to effing Cincinnasty, Ohio.  Ugh.

The worst part is that I haven't seen Jillian for almost two years, and this was the perfect opportunity for girl time and catch-up and traipsing around a cool city.  I was hoping that my first attempt at NOT meticulously planning out my fun would result in hilarious good times and such whatnot.  Oh, what the hell...

I'M STILL COUNTING IT AS MY SPONTANEOUS TRIP, DAMMIT.

Sigh.

UPDATE:  When I went to go check in at the counter to fly home, the agent told me I didn't have the right ticket.  I hoofed it over to the service desk, where another lady let me know that I could get on the 7:20 flight to Chicago!  Yay!  Then it was promptly cancelled!  Wooo!  And, right before it was cancelled, my boyfriend sent me a text that read:

"I've been arrested.  Ugh."

Double yay!  So, apparently, The Boyfriend was incarcerated, and I had no flight to ANYWHERE.  Also, I couldn't get a hold of him to see if he was joking (he wasn't...another very long story in itself.  Just FYI, he actually didn't do anything.  Which is better, or worse, depending on how you look at it).  Imagine a crazy woman power walking through the airport, crying.  That was me!  Fortunately, they were able to get me back on the same flight to Columbus (which left late) and I was home in time to...lock myself out of the house.

I really, really am not making any of this up.

I don't think I need to mention that once my little parolee got home, we drank copious amounts of alcohol and passed out.  Hooray!  No more spontaneous trips for me...they are bad luck.

Baby doll, I'm so sorry. Jude and I were really looking forward to see you.

Boo.

Boo, and *sniff*. PLUS, I feel super greasy and disgusting from breathing other people's air. I was really looking forward to good coffee and farmer's market tomorrow, too! The good news is, my friend from work and I were already planning on making another trip to Chicago this summer, so hopefully I will still see you soon.

Oh how awful! I travel a lot (half of it in the spur of the moment, i.e. less then 1 week in planning) and hold ups like this can really screw up a trip. And that's not to mention all the nasty weather. Here on the east coast we have had 2 days with sun in all of June. I'm ready to fly to anywhere there is sun.

I hope you and your friend Jillian can hook up this summer, Chicago is such a fun place and good friends are few and far between.

Best, Susan

Oh god how annoying. Things like this always seem to conspire against happy exciting trips. And I have just realised how depressing that sounds... but it is kind of true!

Hopefully you will get up their again soon - any chance of compensation?

Nope, bought the ticket on Priceline, so I basically sold my soul. I was actually wondering about the plague of locusts and the blood coming out of the tap we've been having in the apartment...

That. Just. Sucks.
