Relationships Are Like...a Beautiful Car Wreck

I grew up being taught the notion that God will bring you that one person who is like your perfect, beautiful "puzzle piece".  Where you are lacking in strength or character, that person will make up for it with one of their strengths, and going together through life, you will each complement the other so well that you will become that unstoppable "one".

Right.

I have since come to believe much differently.

I was talking to my sister yesterday, and she was complaining about something annoying my little brother does.  And she said, "I thought that God was supposed to pair you with a spouse who DIDN'T do the same thing," implying that my sister-in-law shares this little vice.

Surprise, surprise.  "Opposites" aren't always opposite, and couples can share the same faults.

I then came up with this brilliant analogy:

"About the 'pairing with the spouse' thing...I've come to realize that relationships are a lot less like two people coming together like perfect puzzle pieces, and more like two people coming together like a bad car wreck. Sure, the pieces 'match up', and meld into one another, but it's not always pretty."

So really, relationships are like a beautiful car wreck.  This means that even though one person's laid back nature can be complimented by another person's attention to detail, both can be horrible gossips.  Or slobs.  Or lazy.  It happens.  And that's okay...that's where the learning experiences come in, and that's when you learn to help make each other better.

Aaaand, philosophizing...done.
